We remember Wazed Ali Miah

Wazed Ali Miah, Master Mechanic in ICDDR,B Maintenance for over 30 years [Joined on 1 January 1974 to 31 May 2004 retirement], passed away on September 30, 2005. His wife of 35 years, Amena Begum, and his four grown children survive him.   Mr. Wazed was known as a very punctual and hard working man who had learned his trade through practical experience rather than a vast education.

His eldest son, Abu Sayeed Bakshi recalls that Wazed Ali Miah joined ICDDR,B before his birth, moving from a very poor-paying job begun with an East Pakistan refrigeration company (using kerosene as a power source) in Mirzapur, Tangail. In 1983-84, the family left their village in Tangail and joined him in Dhaka where all three sons and daughter attended higher education. Following graduation from the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, Abu Sayeed Bakshi spent several years working in Saudi Arabia before his father’s illness and death. As a child, Bakshi always respected his father but would only fearfully ask him for financial help, “every time I would ask for 50 taka, my father would give me something more, maybe 60 or 100 taka. This unexpected generosity, when he had financial problems from a low salary, made me more reluctant to ask him directly “ After he began work at ICDDR,B, Wazed Ali was able to save funds to invest in his children’s futures.

When Bakshi began work as an electrical engineer at ICDDR,B, he experienced the warmth and respect for his father from other long-term employees. “All the people asked me about my father and also treated me with respect as “oh, you are the son of Wazed Ali!?”

Colleagues at ICDDR,B and alumni from around the world honor the memory of this very sincere and faithful man. We wish his family comfort from their grief and future successes that would have made Mr. Wazed proud.
