Alumni Association approves Charter, Bylaws and Officers

On December 2, 2004 over 150 former employees of ICDDR,B inaugurated the ICDDR,B Alumni Association by voting for ordinances and electing representatives. Joined by current staff members with more than 25 years at the Centre, the alumni enjoyed songs, dances and a drama organized by Dr. Aliya Naheed and talented staff before dinner and raffle draws in the rooftop pavilion. Inauguration paperweights were presented to each alumnus. MA Rahim edited the souvenir program, supported by advertisements from Dhaka businesses. A Fulbright scholar alumnus from Alabama, Prof. M. A. Khaled won one of the mobile phones. Dr. Anjuman Ara, now working in Nepal, came the furthest for the gathering. Displays of historic photos and stories included memorials for many alumni who have died since 2000. Mr. Shamsher Chowdury expressed willingness to help edit alumni memories for the alumni website and the next Smriti publication.

Newly elected Executive Officers of the Association include Mr. MR Bashir, President; Vice Presidents Dr. KMS Aziz and Dr. M. Badrud Duza; General Secretary MA Wahed; Treasurer AKM Abdus Samad; Joint Secretaries Subash Saha and AM Sardar. Serving two year terms are members Jean Sack, M. Shamsul Islam Khan, Obaidah Kabir, Muhammad Mujibur Rahman, ASM Hamidur Rahman, Jyotsnamoy Chakraborty, Dr. Aliya Naheed, and Dr. Sufia Islam. Ex-officio members include the Executive Director Dr. David A. Sack, the President of the Staff Welfare Association and the Matlab SWA Vice President. The officers will meet regularly to plan functions, obtain benefits for alumni, produce literary and historical publications, network with members in academia, and communicate important news. The external Chapters of the ICDDR,B Alumni Association may nominate representatives to encourage communications with overseas alumni.
