International Women's Day: Background
As part of the the awareness raising of the gender issue the Centre is celebrating International Women’s Day since 2004. In the first year it was only celebrated in the hospital providing a flower to the patient, but from 2005, it was celebrated in the all divisions and Centre.

International women's day is celebrated at 8 March, nationally and internationally. As the United Nations declared when establishing International Women’s ‘securing peace and social progress and full enjoyment of the human rights and fundamental freedom requires the active participation, equality and de development of women. Celebrating the day gives us an opportunity to rethink our women’s position in the centre, society and the state. It also raise awareness about women's right, enhancing mutual respect to men and women together. Each year ICDDR,B takes several programs including discussion, debate, cultural program in presence of prominent personality in the development field with Centre's staffs. This day Centre has taken a festive look with festoon, banners, and well decorated gender board. Centre has given a wonderful opportunity for staff to take an oath to eradicate all forms discrimination against women through celebrating the day. Field sites of ICDDR,B have also taken different programs with close collaboration with government officials and local schools and colleges.
Gender Book Fair

ICDDR,B gender unit represents its communication materials and publications at the gender book fair organized by Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka 2008. Participating at a gender book fair is an opportunity for ICDDR,B to share its publications and material with other organization. Similar kind of fair has organized by USAID for the observance of 8 March International Women’s Day 2009. Gender Unit successfully represents ICDDR,B’s publications and other communication materials such as poster, brochures, booklet etc.
