The RTI/STI laboratory and its sentinel laboratories in Chittagong, Dhaka, Jessore, and Sylhet are conducting epidemiological studies of RTI/STI among different population groups and are monitoring antimicrobial susceptibility of N. gonorrhoeae in Bangladesh. The laboratory also provides assistance to other countries in the region through skills transfer in surveillance systems and diagnostic facilities.
In parallel to nationwide epidemiological surveillance on RTI/STI, the laboratory is involved in a number of intervention studies, and in providing consultancy services to national and international projects on RTI/STI. ICDDR,B also contributes significantly to knowledge transfer of public-health importance by publishing N. gonorrhoeae antimicrobial resistance data routinely in the Health and Science Bulletin.
