Invitation for Submission of Manuscripts

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to inform you that the ICDDR,B has been publishing a peer-reviewed bimonthly journal titled "Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition" (JHPN) beginning the June 2000 issue. JHPN incorporates the Journal of Diarrhoeal Diseases Research (JDDR).

The mission of this bimonthly (6 issues per year) journal is to provide a forum for publishing new findings on issues pertinent to maternal, child and family health and related issues of population and nutrition. Issues of fertility, child spacing, maternal and child nutrition, and specific common illnesses are integrally related to overall health status, and papers which deal with these interactions are especially welcome. The Journal has also a special interest in publishing original research of relevance to developing countries.

To facilitate the rapid publication of high-quality articles, the Journal has several section editors who review manuscripts in their area of expertise. These sections include the following: Emerging infections, Health Systems, Immunization, Nutrition, Population, Reproductive and Neonatal Health, Water and Sanitation, Gender Health and Human Rights, and Social Determinants of Health.

The Journal has adopted the following editorial policies:

  • The Journal has emphasis on speedy publication. Most articles are published within four months of acceptance.
  • While an absolute rule against articles primarily dealing with industrialized countries is not precluded, preference is given to those articles dealing with issues of developing countries.
  • Papers that are well-written and presented in the style of journal are eligible for a fast track review. We strongly encourage authors to obtain help with English writing if it is not their first language, and to pay careful attention to the "Information for Contributors" which is found at the end of each issue and at the journal website.
  • Public-health professionals sometimes report lessons they have learned from their experience. Often these are important lessons and may be reported in working papers and monographs. While these may be valuable, they may also be biased, and the data may not be sufficiently robust to insure reliability. The Journal, therefore, prefers to consider those articles that describe well-designed studies and are substantiated by adequate data.
  • While the section headings (Emerging infections, Health Systems, Immunization, Nutrition, Population, Reproductive and Neonatal Health, Water and Sanitation, Gender Health and Human Rights, and Social Determinants of Health) suggest narrowly focused articles, the Journal favours manuscripts that show relationships between the different sections and those relating to broad aspects of health.

Original research articles, review articles, short reports, and letters dealing with the above subjects are considered for publication in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition. The Journal also publishes case studies. In principle, an original research article should not exceed (6,500 words, including all illustrations and references. Review articles should not generally exceed 8,500 words), including illustrations and references. Short reports also should not exceed 2,500 words, including all references and illustrations. Letters should be brief and to the point.

I am inviting you to submit papers for publication in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition. Manuscripts, alongwith a cover letter, should be sent to the Editorial office in Dhaka in electronic format to: jhpn@icddrb.org . An acknowledgement will be returned indicating that it has been received. A print copy of the manuscript sent by mail should be forwarded to: Managing Editor, Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition, GPO Box 128 (Mohakhali, Dhaka 1212), Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh.

I am also requesting you to encourage your colleagues and friends to submit their papers for publication in the JHPN. Please share this letter with them.

While preparing manuscripts, please follow the Vancouver Style (Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals prepared by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which is available at http://www.icmje.org .
