Basic Information

The Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition (JHPN), a peer-reviewed publication of ICDDR,B, is published 6 times a year.

ICDDR,B became the focal point of world's medical communities for developing oral rehydration therapy (ORT) which saves millions of lives each year. The Centre is an independent, international, non-profit organization for research, education, training, clinical services, and information dissemination. Located in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, it is the only truly international health research institution based in a developing country. The Centre?s research activities now encompass a wide range of protocols with emphasis on child health, reproductive health, nutrition, infectious diseases and vaccine sciences, health and family-planning systems, population sciences, poverty and health, HIV/AIDS, diarrhoeal diseases, and social and beahvioural sciences.

As one of the scientific publications of the Centre, the quarterly Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition (incorporating the Journal of Diarrhoeal Diseases Research) publishes articles of authors from any part of the globe, but has a special interest in publishing original research of relevance to developing countries. It publishes original research articles, review articles, short communications, and letters on new findings.

The JHPN is published in English 6 times (February, April, June, August, October, and December) a year. No separate supplements are published. It is indexed/abstracted by the major international indexing systems, including the PubMed/MEDLINE, Index Medicus, Current Contents: Clinical Medicine, Google Scholar, Research Alert, SCI Expanded, SCI JCR, POPLINE, Elsevier, Bibliograhic databases (Scopus, Embase, EMBiology and Emcare), Bioline International, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, CAB Abstracts, CAB Health, and many others.

Mission

The mission of the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition is to provide a forum for rapidly publishing new findings on issues pertinent to maternal, child and family health and related issues of population and nutrition. Issues of fertility, child spacing, maternal and child nutrition, and specific common illnesses are integrally related to overall health status, and papers that deal with these interactions are especially welcome.

Editorial policies

The JHPN has adopted the following editorial policies:

• Speedy publication: The Journal puts emphasis on speedy publication. Most articles are published within four months of acceptance.
• Developing-country relevance: While an absolute rule against articles primarily dealing with industrialized countries is not precluded, preference is given to those articles dealing with issues of developing countries, e.g. Family health, not "child health." In an attempt to improve health of children, many programmes dealt primarily with issues of child survival. The Journal does not have this bias, but deals with all age-groups and all stages of life.
• Editorial assistance: Papers that are well written and presented in the style of journal eligible for a fast track review. The manuscripts that are poorly written are returned without further examination. However, technical editing for grammatical haws and inconsistency in style elements is done on the accepted papers. We strongly encourage authors to obtain help with English writing if it is not their first language and to pay careful attention to the "Information for Contributors" which is found at the end of each issue and at the journal website.
• Science, not "lessons learned": Public-health professionals sometimes report lessons they have learned from their experience. Often these are important lessons, and these may be reported in working papers and monographs. While these may be valuable, they may also be biased, and the data may not be sufficiently robust to insure reliability. The Journal prefers to select articles that were well-designed and substantiated by adequate data.
• Cross-cutting. While the section headings (Emerging Infections, Health Systems, Immunization, Nutrition, Population, Reproductive and Neonatal Health, Water and Sanitation, and Gender Health and Human Rights) suggest narrowly-focused articles, the Journal favours manuscripts that show relationships between the different sections and those relating to broad aspects of health.

To facilitate the rapid publication of high-quality articles, the Journal has several section editors who review manuscripts in their area of expertise. These sections include the following: Emerging Diseases, Health Systems, Immunization, Nutrition, Population, Reproductive and Neonatal Health, Water and Sanitation, Gender Health and Human Rights, and Social Determinants of Health.
