Assessment Tools for Developing Mainstreaming Strategies

Purnima Menon gave some examples of tools and approaches such as the Assessment, Analysis, and Action (AAA) cycle created by UNICEF in 1998 (mainly utilized at the community level) and Fajans et al. AJPH, 2006. Strategic approach to improving reproductive health.  Mainstreaming nutrition is not an entirely new approach.  BASICS, Linkages, and Essential Nutrition Actions (ENA) are all examples of attempts to mainstream nutrition.  It is important that the MNI learn from what has been done in moving the mainstreaming nutrition agenda forward.  The tools are designed to inform the assessment process so that a thorough assessment informs the design of programs.
