The first 28 days of life are critical.
In Bangladesh, almost one in every two deaths of children under the age of five is neonatal. A child is 15 times more likely to die in their first month of life, than any other time during their first year.

For almost six years, the Projahnmo project has focused on rural communities in Bangladesh to find ways to improve maternal and newborn healthcare to reduce neonatal mortality. Our experts have identified unskilled delivery at home, poor newborn care practices and inadequate access to healthcare facilities as major barriers to reducing newborn mortality.
The home-based strategies for improving newborn care developed have shown dramatic success in reducing newborn mortality by 34%.
This is a critical milestone in helping Bangladesh achieve Millennium Development Goal 4 of a two-thirds reduction in under-five mortality by 2015.
Projahnmo is a collaboration between ICDDR,B, Johns Hopkins University, the Government of Bangladesh and Shimantik.
